I was in Buenos Aires a couple of months ago, and I didn't find people to be image-obsessed. In fact, day to day people dress quite sloppily. It was a big contrast to Rio de Janeiro, where I'd just come from and where the majority of women dress very sexy. People say modest dress in Bueunos Aires is on purpose, because of the safety issues there. People don'e want to be ostentatious to avoid standing out and getting robbed. I'd argue it also has to do with the cynical and risk-averse culture.. because Brazilian cities have similar safety issues. Anyway.. it's true for going out and special occasions people get dressed up, but.. not really more than in other countries. And yeah, people are on average thinner and in better shape than the US, for example. But.. neither is everyone a super model.
