I was in this kind of relationship when I was very young(18-20). I ended up in this relationship because we were from the same set, I secretly like him and he secretly liked me, so we got together. My partner at the time was very jealous and manipulating, he control what I did, how I did it, when to do it, and how long to do and that time I THOUGHT his assertiveness and dominance was his way of showing his love for me, when it was just low key mental abuse. The physical abuse didn't start right away, little things like asking how long I would be away from our place , asking me why I did things a certain way, and why I chose to hang around with certain people. A year into the relationship is when the physical abuse started, starting from grabbing my arm when he got mad to straight popping in the face when he didnt like a response. He beat the sh*t out of me for an entire year, during our last altercation I decided that either he was going to kill me or I was going to kill him even though I cared for him deeply, I just couldn't let him continue to beat TF out of me. I was 20 when I ended the relationship, I'm 46 now. After that traumatic episode in my life I came to the realization that an abusive relationship is never something to strive for. Someone beating on you or you beating on another person ain't relationship goals. Any form abuse for someone that claims to love a person should not be something some of us (BIPOC LGBTQ+) people should romanticize.
