I think the same is true of media as a whole. Marry for love is the culturally accepted attitude of the age, but the divorce rate is now at 60-70%. There is an almost magical aspect to representations of love in media. It's represented as easy, or so natural that no *real* effort is required for a relationship to work. Of course, it's much easier to sell happy nonsense about what people can gain and feel from something, than to sell the notion of responsibility. There is no such thing as a happy ever after in the real world; it's not that simple. Rather than accept this fact, it appears most cling to the deception, and throw everything away to try again for the unobtainable ideal.
