Jamie, I was in graduate school while battling active addiction. A lot of people don’t realize that there are people who have many accomplishments, and people who continue to achieve who struggle with this disorder. I fw a dirty mack of a school that has closed 3 majors while I was in them, one with one class and a practicum left I couldn’t pay for, so I went back to hustling for that and because I lost my pain physician. I stayed because nothing transfers. My ex did me so bad I had to have multiple surgeries and my injuries turned into DDD and dystonia. My doc left suddenly without a taper or referral, so maybe he ran into some trouble, or went out of style with the Opioid Epidemic hitting the news. (No, I didn’t run out of pills or ask for double scripts, or make up ailments). I did miss a GYN appointment I didn’t know was a pain clinic attendance “strike,” but that’s about it. There are millions of people who have experienced this, or a very similar circumstance. I now think herbaceuticals (No, THC doesn’t work for me, but I’m glad it helps others), Suboxone, even methadone are safer ways to treat severe pain than short acting opioids that cause the limbic system to signal us to chase them…same goes for crack, alcohol, and various self-treatments available. Purdue did the research to know this, but had vested interests in a “long acting” oxy patent. They knew their products weren’t long-acting, but misrepresented them in their patent application. (this is all officially documented in court records and even government studies, at this point, if anyone is not familiar). Whether it’s physical or mental distress we seek relief from, or how, we’re up against a hell of a system! You have the knowledge and lived experience to really make a difference in the world, no matter what field you use it in. I hope we both live long enough to get to do so. I didn’t think you were, for sure, spinning stories when I heard you, but I thought if you were, the questions may have put you on the spot. I forgot sometimes interviewers ask certain questions because they have spoken with folks and know the answers. But I have been there, and know it happens every day that achievers get addicted, yet manage to stay in school and in the streets. I knew a kid who rented a room a few blocks from campus and it turned out to be a felony-friendly traphouse (you know the rest), and people with mad credentials in the streets. Can’t give examples cause it’s identifying, but addiction does not discriminate! Keep your head up. You might want to look up data on how Suboxone can help with crack cravings (or take it from me, personally, 5 years into recovery). Just an idea, but I’m sure you’ve got your own.
