I was at the Airshow as a little kid when Grumman introduced this plane to the public in Brookhaven. When it took off at the show we were lined up next to the runway and as it took off it hit it's after burners and the crowd got snowed on with after burner ash! As a kid I had one of the wooden scale models of this plane and the F111 on my mantle over the fire place as my father was one of the lead designers of the plane! There were 10 wooden mock ups made for the presentation to the Navy and he was awarded one of each of those planes mock ups. The wings moved just like the real ones did and yes when my parents weren't around I did play with them even though I wasn't supposed to touch them! i didn't know any better I mean I was like 6 or 7! To me they were just cool toys! My dad was in charge of one of the engineering departments and Grumman had to send to California to get honorary degrees for my father because he had not gone to college and it didn't look right on the brochure for all his subordinates to have degrees and he didn't. I always thought the coolest thing about the plane was the way the nose kind of tilted down and made the plane look like it was about to pounce on you! OK so I am going to brag a little bit and say my father was without a doubt one the the countries best engineers and in the field of Aeronautics he had few peers. He was one of 3 recognized experts in his field. We was the lead designer for the Lunar Module cockpit and I had to move from NY to Texas twice so he could supervise the construction of the first two. He was also the one the Navy had do the evaluation on the Russian MiG we captured in the mid 90's. He was so highly regarded by the Navy that when the competition for the X22 and X23 were being held my father was in charge of Grumman's X23 project. The X23 is a superior plane in many ways. It is a much better Dog fighter than the X22 was but Lockheed's X22 was a closer fit to the mission parameters the Navy was looking for at the time! It's to my understanding that the X23 airframe is being used in our next generation 6 fighter design as it is a very good dog fighter! So I say he was the best Engineer we had before he died because when Lockheed won the competition and the X22 was then to become the F22 . The Navy went to Grumman and told Grumman Vinnies doesn't work here anymore!
