I've lived just outside of Asheville all my life - 56 years. It has certainly changed, but that's because tourists/visitors love the city and the surrounding area. Word gets out, transplant after transplant eventually move here, and the next thing you know everything starts changing. It was once a peaceful, beautiful city but it was starving. It wasn't thriving. Once you start to thrive you bring in more people which boosts costs, increases crime, etc. Going downhill is going to happen. Asheville still has it's decent qualities and nasty can be found in any city. The Sports comments are BS. Traffic is really bad at times but I drive 23 miles from the north side of the city to the south side and it' takes me around 30 minutes unless there's an accident. They're working on widening highways in and out of the city but it's a mess. Homeless are abundant, it's irritating, but that's a growing concern everywhere and the needs of those folks needs to be addressed. The downtown scene is eclectic with lots of culinary gems but getting to them and finding a parking space keeps me from doing it much. It's expensive as S#!@ to live here and it's hard to enjoy things because so many tourists eat up reservations, parking, even sidewalk space. I worked right smack in the middle of downtown for 24 years and it was really nice, calm. clean and not such a PIA. I still love Asheville, it's my hometown, and I know many of the points in 1 - 10 have some validity, but some of it's blown out of proportion. Rural areas surrounding Asheville is where it's at! Truthfully, I just wish everybody would heed this warning and get the H&%@ out so things could go back to the way they used to be. And keep in mind, any place can seem awful if you dig and look for things.
