But unlike queer people who are used to the idea that not everyone we like is going to potentially like us back, society tells straight people that they're the norm, and conditions everyone to look at straight as the default, so you grow up with this unchallenged assumption that everyone you find attractive has the potential to possibly like you back, and it's not until you begin to grow up that it becomes clear that that societal narrative is wrong and hugely oversimplified, and that not everyone is straight, which for some reason is something people are terrified of children knowing, as if you can be turned gay just by knowing about it. Anyways once you grow up and you find out gay people exist, and that you can be attracted to them even if you're not a gender they're attracted to, it's a bit of a gut punch, because you've grown up not being taught that that's really a possibility, and just assuming that everyone you like COULD theoretically like you back, even though that's not the case. So what you have to do in that scenario, when you feel that gut feeling that a person or character HAS to be straight, is push back and question it. Consider that it's possible that they're not. Consider what genuine proof there is that they're straight or if that's just what your default assumption is, or if it might be wishful thinking and you don't necessarily have hard evidence either way (or you do in which case go off that)The point is that you need to teach yourself to temper your expectations because it's not something you were taught how to do growing up. And it can take a while and require work, but ultimately it's necessary to do. Because otherwise you just end up denying reality, and you never want to be that guy houghing copium and losing his mind insisting that gay women HAVE to find him attractive, and that they must really be straight, because that guy is super pathetic and he's not you, and none of want him to be you, so please if you haven't already, start putting in the mental work to unlearn the assumption that everyone is straight unless proven otherwise, and learn to temper your expectations and accept reality like the rest of us who've had it shoved down our throats since we were kids and our best friend didn't want to play house with us because there needed to be a boy to play the husband, because two girls couldn't both be the parents, and then we cried because we didn't want there to have to be a boy, and every time a boy played we either had to be his wife (gross!) or we had to be the baby, but we didn't want to be the baby, we hated being the baby.... and can you tell we're not all totally over it?
