I've only had one teacher ask for pronouns and preferred names. Picture the most stereotypical gay guy you can think of. Rainbows all over the choir room, gayest fashion sense, always talking about his chihuahuas, openly being a safe space for the young trans guys in the choir. Now make him cis and straight but keeping all of that. That's the type of guy he is. On the first day he gave us a paper so he could get to know us. The first thing it asked on the paper was our government name, our preferred name, and our preferred pronouns. I was still too scared to put my chosen name but it made me so happy. Everyone had fun in his class and he was by far the best teacher I've ever had. During semester change he took the opportunity to ask all the open trans guys in the all female choir if they'd like to move to the mixed choir and that he'd put them in the mens vocals. I dont know how many lives he saved just by doing those simple things. It definitely helped me. It made me feel so safe in his class especially for it being in Arkansas. I miss you mr R. You have no clue how much that class shaped me as a person. As a man.
