i'm from Germany and worked two times in construction in Dubai. we had an exclusive contract with a big German fashion brand and had to build their flagship store in the Dubai mall...once you arrived you could feel something is wrong. the workers were happy to work with us because we were from Germany, but you could tell they had fear. their supervisor was acting like the biggest, disrespectful asshole towards them...he had big saber knife on his belt to intimidate those poor men. he was screaming at them all the time. one thing I vividly remember was one mistake...one finger while he was taking his knife out of the holster. in the ceiling were bottles full of piss because the workers didn't want to go to the toilet or maybe were not allowed to go (idk)...tourists don't see those things and have no idea under what conditions those fancy, shiny shops, hotels and malls were build. i haven't been, but you can only imagine how bad their staff housing must be. it's modern slavery! that experice changed my view on those Arab countries completely!
