Well, I can say that growing up with two alcoholic parents has absolutely ruined my life. I’m an underachiever in every aspect of my life. I have always been content to just “survive”, I never thought I deserved anything more than that. I experienced so much fighting, screaming and hatred growing up that I used to think that this is the way people communicated with each other and I sought out creeps for boyfriends and got rid of the “nice guys”. Not only were both of my parents alcoholics, one was extremely narcissistic and the other one was very probably bi-polar. He would just stop speaking to any of us or all of us for no reason whatsoever. I can remember one Christmas where he wouldn’t speak to anybody while we opened our gifts. To this day I simply cannot stand the holidays. My childhood and adolescence were a nightmare that I wouldn’t go through again if somebody paid me 20 million dollars. I stopped speaking to my parents after I moved out of the house and I completely cut them out of my life. My mother was especially evil, blaming everything on me, calling me a bitch and screaming that I was “an angry headcase”. Yeah, but I was not an alcoholic, but THEY both were. Needless to say I have been in therapy for years and years and probably will be until the day I die. I’ve gone through periods in my life where I could barely drag myself out of bed I’ve been so depressed. Do I find life enjoyable or fun? The answer to that is NO but I’m working on it. I’m also getting much better at establishing boundaries and not letting people trample all over me. For anybody else struggling with with a wrecked self self esteem from growing up with selfish, self centered drunks, get yourself into therapy ASAP, even if you have to eat beans and rice to afford it.
