Ladyboys don't refer to themselves as kathoey, generally. They will usually call each other woman (phu-ying) or woman of the second type (sao pra-phet song). The thing to realize is that the history of gender diverse femininity all over South Asia goes back to antiquity. Hijra / Kinnar in India and Pakistan, Waria in Indonesia, Bakla in the Philippines and the Kathoey in Thailand.
