Interesting topic. Personally I'm all for well written sex scenes and agree that most of them feel meh, especially with the heroines and often protag's personality changes. I've once read a review on a VN called Gunjou no Sora wo Koete by Light (on vnreviews dot blog) where I learned that some rare developpers even show characters having breakdowns in the middle of the scene, thus its purpose becomes to show how the characters comfort each other. Some stories have sex as an integral part of the plot (like a certain mature BL manga where one of the guys is a pro porn actor, or Velvet Kiss where the whole story revolves around the dude being blackmailed by a rich selfish girl), but otherwise I think we can totally have a long romance with an engaging adventure in an otherwise sexless story. The VN can even have adult themes like finding a job, dealing with an insecure wife or fighting in a war but can perfectly get its message across without explicit sex scenes. An interesting example in manga and anime is Banana fish - there's implied and actual rape but the story remains strong because rape is treated as rape, the issue isn't sugarcoated and no long graphic drawn out rape scene is shown. Plus the theme logically fits in the setting and lore.
