My medical “oh crap” moments all involve my brain tumor diagnosis. Long story short the tumor was crushing my optic nerves and I was losing my sight. The “oh crap” was after my first surgery. My doctor had removed the tumor and I had recovered a lot of my lost vision. About a month after I went home I started losing more vision. Oh crap. MRI showed another mass as big, if not bigger, than the tumor. Turns out there was a small cyst that grew close to the tumor, but too close to vital structures to safely tie off. The cyst ballooned in size, and it was crushing my nerves. Surgery 2 drained the cyst, but it filled up again. My doctor said I needed radiation to permanently deal with the cyst, which I underwent. Surgery 3 and 4 were failed attempts to place a drain in the cyst to keep it away from my optic nerves while the radiation kills it. Turns out the cyst had a resilient membrane and the drain couldn’t pierce through. I was very close to total blindness at this point. Oh crap again. Surgery 5 was the last hope to save what was left of my sight. It was going to be radical and invasive, the previous surgeries being minimally invasive. I was cut from my right mid ear to my forehead, and a large piece of my skull was removed. My brain was lifted a couple millimeters by a machine, and my doctor got to see the cyst. He tried to place the drain again, and finally saw why the two previous operations failed. He had to cut open the cyst to finally place the drain. He closed up my head and I had 30 staples keeping everything together. I had to get it drained once every few weeks, via a port under my scalp. The radiation worked and the cyst was finally dead. As a result of my optic nerve damage, I have permanently lost around 75% of my sight. Though what I have left isn’t perfect, I’ll gladly take that over complete blindness

This is quite the epic show.

I am happy to live in a time where you can openly see the world in the eyes of another while laying down in your bed on the other side of the world.
