One small addition for the last statement. These shipments where paid back not just in lives but also in gold. They weren't gifts or donations. The last payment for land lease shipments was done in 2006.

Its very strange, because there was about 15 years between Oda's worst and best examples of trans representation. So there is a genuinely decent possibility that Oda really was transphobic back in like 2009 and has just actually become less transphobic over time. Although, this argument is hard to truly stand by when we have little no idea what Oda's beliefs are outside of what is projected through the art he creates. I think the only wrong stance to have in this situation is to defend this episode as not transphobic, or to say that because he has gotten better with trans representation that it somehow undoes the transphobia in this episode.
