Eventually a standard format appeared which represented the comic strip. Any time you see the following four groups of lines, it's a reference to Loss: One long vertical line; one long vertical line and one short vertical line; two long vertical lines; One long vertical line and one horizontal line. These lines represent the characters and the groupings represent each of the panels of the comic. The first line by itself is the main character of the series running into the emergency room after getting news about his wife in the first panel. In the second panel the same character (the long vertical line) is asking a nurse (a shorter vertical line since the nurse is sitting) where to find his wife. In the third he's (stil the same long vertical line) asking a doctor (a new long vertical line since he's standing) what happened to his wife. In the last panel, he (still the long vertical line) sees his wife (a horizontal line, since she's laying down) after she has miscarried their baby, which means that the baby died while it was still inside her. The joke isn't about the contents of the comic strip at all, which is, in fact quite sad, if very unexpected. The joke is just the fact that you can find this same reference to the comic strip lots of places all over the internet and in a lot of video games. I don't find it very funny and most people who are familiar don't think it's funny either. It's just a meme.
