S18E14: The Movement

I think Oda just hasn't unpacked the Sanji + Okama thing yet. After the timeskip, Sanji still had a lot of issues to work out (which are now coming to a climactic moment in wano). His whole character arc has really been framed by his exploration of masculinity and femininity. As a child he learned to view men as despicable cold-hearted beasts who use physical power and manipulation to abuse women (mother & sister) and anyone who is weak or doesn't live up to this twisted ideal of manhood. He idolizes women for being, in his mind, the essence of beauty, compassion, and warmth. Sanji is warm, kind and nurturing bc until Zeff his only real role model was his mom. Sanji has a heart of fire, where his father wanted him to have a heart of ice. From Zeff he learns a new masculinity that is strong, noble and self-sacrificing (Zeff eats his leg to make sure Sanji is fed). Despite constantly asserting his manliness, his place on the ship is in the kitchen. He keeps the Straw Hats, his family, well-fed, healthy and nurtured. He is caring and empathetic and essentially fulfills the role of Team Mom. Characters even overtly call out his gentle nature. This is blatantly in contrast to the performative machismo he learned from Zeff and the Baratie cooks. Sanji hasn't assimilated these two parts of himself, and he strives to be a Gentleman but is still trying to figure out how gentle and man can truly coexist. Which is why I think the Okama part about him having a heart of a maiden is interesting. And I also feel that this is at the heart if his relationship with Zoro. Zoro is the Ice to Sanji's Fire and he represents a form of masculinity that is more akin to Judge Vinsmoke. Zoro values the pursuit of strength and dominance in his art of swordsmanship, and otherwise spends most time sleeping and not being helpful outside of his specific role. Sanji on the other hand battles and defends the crew just like Zoro but also spends the rest of his time doing chores, cooking, cleaning and focusing on nurturing the crew rather than just protecting them from danger. So honestly I think Zoro is the Dad and Sanji is the Mom + they fight like an old married couple. I think the jury is still out on whether or not he is an Okama deep down, but my bet would be no. I do however think that this development will be completed with his character. Oda doesn't do things like this for no reason. By the end, I suspect Sanji will truly be the gentleman who lives up to his and the audience's expectations (and won't be so pervy and misogynistic) 😊😊

Part of the problem with this Escort is the strange configuration of the slide grip. It's like it's only designed to get a firm grasp when PULLING it rearward.
