Stop! Hibari-Kun! is one of those anachronistic gems whose existance really make no sense. The manga was pretty wholesome (as wholesome as you can be on a BOY'S MAGAZINE in the year 80) when it came to trans issues, and it enjoyed a periphery demographic of girls (who I am sure came in all configurations) who loved the female leads style. Hibari, unlike most trans characters (EVEN THE ONES MADE TODAY) was not a bundle of pure femininity or insecurity (I will never be a real girl!-like complains never came from her), instead she was just herself and if you didn't like it, then she would just ignore you or beat the crap out of you if you were transphobic. The manga itself also shows she had been like this since she was a child, much to the dismay of her family. Her whole family accepted her in different ways (With Tsubame being the most transphobic and absolutely against all this, yet still finding enough tenderness in her heart to relate to Hibari). Hibari's little sister, Suzume admires her and acts like she does, and she actually calls her Hibari-chan (usually used for females).
